The model that Sun has been following in their own utility computing service is closer to the mainframe model... Amazon is creating an entirely web services controlled cloud model. Amazon has the competitive edge on development time right now and it may be in the interest of the other companies you mentioned to consider partnerships. I am sure there are things each company can learn from the other -- collaboration is not unknown in the technology industry.
